Brookwood Bullets are your MBL Midget Champions!!

The Brookwood Bullets finished off a roller coaster of a season at their highest point, winning the MBL midget division. After finishing the season on a low, losing the last 2 regular season games, Brookwood took advantage of the 2 weeks leading up to the playoffs to work on their team game. Finishing 3rd in the division, Brookwood knew it would not be an easy route to the finals but playing in the toughest division had prepared them for what was about to come.

Kicking off the 1st round of the playoffs, Brookwood was matched against the #2 cross-seed, their biggest rival in the West Island Lakers. This match from the start was to be a hard fought and skilled match up. The Bullets started off slowly and were being out played in the 1st qtr, but by half time, they made it a 1 point game. Showing signs of life, the Bullets fed off that energy in the second half and provided a more consistent game both of the offensive and defensive side which lead to the 69-65 win. Brookwood’s leading scorer was Kamal Spinsby, who last year at this time was a West Island Lakers and this was his first game against his old club. Kamal seemed unstoppable on this day as he scored a game high 23 pts, shooting 3/6 from the 3pt line and had 3 steals. Following right behind him was Abdul Kamane with 12 pts, 5 steals and 5 rebs and Cyrus Senior with 10 pts and some key defensive stops. Chipping in with 9 pts, 5 rebs and 3 steals was Reynard Robinson.

Semi-final match up placed the 3rd ranks Bullets against the #1 cross-seed Dawson Blues, whom took the season series from the Bullets, both season and tournament finals. The Blues are probably the best match-up for the Bullets in terms of size, skill and talent. Differences between the teams, Blues have League MVP James Tyrell and the Blues never played against Bullets Center, Daniel Fisher. League MVP James Tyrell basically control his team from the start, as they came out strong in the first qtr in a low scoring 1st half. The bullets were able to maintain a consistent game and keep the game close. And that’s all Brookwood need going into the 2nd half, was a close game. Both Daniel Fisher and Jalen Rose took their games to whole new levels, both offensively and defensively. Jalen Rose was able to lock down the leading scorers from the blues, which lead to him scoring 20pts, 2/3 from 3 point land and 5 steals. Daniel Fisher was a key player in the game, scoring a team high 21 pts and grabbing 17 rebounds, mostly on the offensive glass and a career high 6 blocks as his intimidation factor on the defensive side helped a big way limiting the scoring of the Blues. Bullets won 76-71 and finished the game off in the final minute to secure the win and move to the finals. Also adding to the scoring was Abdul Kamane with 12 points and 9 rebs and Kamal Spinsby with 8 pts.

The finals marked the 3rd match between Brookwood and the #2 ranked Parc-X Knights; team split the season series with a game a piece. If you thought that this game would be any different then the previous 2 playoff games, then you were wrong. This marked the closest, most defensive match of the season for both teams. The score at the end of the 1st qtr was 14-12 and at halftime was 26-21 Bullets. The Bullets had finally gelled as a team and lead most of the game, but the turning point of the game was in the 3rd qtr when the Bullets forced the Knights to turnover the ball 3 out of the next 4 possessions with 24 second shot clock violations. After the 3rd qtr, the Bullets didn’t look back, taking the MBL Championship. Leading the way was finals MVP Abdul Kamane with 20pts 9 rebs and 3 stls. Following right behind him was Cyrus Senior and Kamal Spinsby with 8 pts each and some strong leadership skills on the offensive side while Jalen Rose and Reynard Robinson had 7 points each and played a strong defensive game.

Congratulations to all the players from this season and to all the guys moving up, good luck and to all those back next season, we going for a repeat and our season already started this past week with the preparation for the summer team.
